Default Screens
Default Screens (under Setup → Default Screens) controls the non-trial screens that frame the project experience: the general instruction screen, calibration, participant details collection, debrief, and completion redirects.
General instruction screen
Section titled “General instruction screen”Add an opening screen shown to all participants before the trial file begins. Typically used for study-specific instructions, consent confirmation, or welcoming text.
Calibration
Section titled “Calibration”Display size calibration
Section titled “Display size calibration”Ask participants to calibrate their screen so that stimuli are shown at accurate physical sizes (centimetres or degrees of visual angle). Participants drag a slider to match a reference object.
Credit card calibration
Section titled “Credit card calibration”An alternative calibration method: participants hold a physical credit card against the screen and align it with the on-screen outline to set the pixel-per-cm ratio.
Participant details collection
Section titled “Participant details collection”Choose whether to collect demographic information from participants before they begin. The form is shown after the general instruction screen but before the first trial.
Options that can be collected:
- Age, gender, handedness, education, nationality
- Up to 5 custom fields defined in the General settings
Fullscreen mode
Section titled “Fullscreen mode”Enable a prompt asking participants to enter fullscreen mode before starting. This reduces distraction and ensures consistent display conditions.
End screens
Section titled “End screens”Screen-out debrief
Section titled “Screen-out debrief”The message shown to participants who were screened out by screener logic (then = screenout). Customise this to acknowledge their attempt and explain politely that they do not meet the eligibility criteria.
You can also provide a redirect URL for screen-out participants (required for external platforms such as Prolific or SONA).
Debrief text
Section titled “Debrief text”The message shown to all participants who complete the study. Typically includes:
- A thank-you message
- A brief explanation of the study’s purpose (post-study debriefing)
- Contact information if participants have questions
Show average correct score
Section titled “Show average correct score”When enabled, the debrief screen shows the participant’s mean accuracy across all trials marked with select = 1.
Completion visualisations
Section titled “Completion visualisations”Display charts summarising the participant’s performance on the debrief screen:
| Chart type | Shows |
|---|---|
| Bar chart | Mean value per condition |
| Table | Tabular breakdown by condition |
| Line chart | Values over time / trial sequence |
Choose which measure to visualise:
- Correct: accuracy
- RT: reaction time
- RTCorrect: reaction time on correct trials only
Use the condition1, condition2, or condition3 columns from your trial file as the grouping factor. Results are grouped hierarchically: if you use condition1 and condition2, data is split by condition1 first, then subdivided by condition2.
Completion validation URLs
Section titled “Completion validation URLs”Integrate with external recruitment platforms by providing completion URLs that are called when a participant finishes.
Completion codes
Section titled “Completion codes”Testable can generate a completion code shown to participants on the debrief screen:
| Type | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Custom code | A fixed code you define, the same for every participant |
| Random code | A unique code generated per participant, more secure since participants cannot share codes |
Testable Minds
Section titled “Testable Minds”If you recruit through Testable Minds, completion tracking is handled automatically; no completion code or redirect URL is needed.
Prolific
Section titled “Prolific”Testable automatically redirects participants to the Prolific completion URL. Enter your Prolific completion code in the field provided.
Enter your SONA credit-granting URL. Testable calls this URL on successful completion to award course credit automatically.
Next steps
Section titled “Next steps”- Informed Consent: collect formal consent before any trial data
- Participants & Data: participant limits and recruitment integration
- Screener Surveys: configure the screen-out logic that triggers the screen-out debrief
